Password Management

Password Management

Password Management

One of the areas that we review for businesses is their password management & strategy. It doesn’t matter if its a one man band or a business with multiple staff members, we never want to see passwords stored on bits of paper, shared between staff insecurely or even worse, kept on email or in a word document on the desktop (we have seen it all).

We advocate the use of multi-factor authentication wherever you can, and the use of a password management tool to keep things as secure as they can be, and also to give you the ability to share passwords with other staff or team members securely.

We use 1Password for this internally, and we have been through a number of password managers. We have a secure vault set up for each customer, and only give access to that vault and passwords to staff members on a need to know basis only. We keep things as secure as they can be.

There are several advantages for us, and for me in particularly, when it comes to this tool;

Remembering Passwords

No more remembering and using simple, repeated password. All passwords are stored in the password manager and can simply be retrieved securely. Even has a client for the mobile device, enabling you to securely log in through the 1Password manager auto filling credentials.

Securely Storing Passwords

Websites can be simply opened from the app, or from the browser extension, and automatically filled in with stored credentials

Password Reuse & Compromise

1Password informs me when a password is reused, prompting me to change credentials so if one system is compromised, the attackers cant reuse the same credentials against other systems as we have seen in the past. Also 1Password tells us when a password has been compromised, prompting for a change to ensure that the account, app or website is secure.

You can even run a scan to check your passwords against a known list of owned or easy to guess passwords to further help secure your systems

Multifactor Authentication

The system tells me if there is Multifactor authentication supported, allowing me to further secure access to some systems.

When it comes to Security, cost and investment is an issue for businesses today, but for the low cost of this product and application, its a no brainer.
