Free Online Tools Could Be a Hidden Threat to Your Business

Have you ever needed to quickly turn a Word document into a PDF? Maybe you searched online, found a free tool, clicked a button, and – voilà – it was done.

Easy, right?

But here’s the thing: that quick fix might be putting your business at serious risk.

Right now, the FBI is warning that some of these “free” file converters could actually be hiding something dangerous – like ransomware.

What’s the real risk?

Many of these free tools do exactly what they say – they convert your files from one format to another. And that’s what makes them so tricky. They seem trustworthy. They work. So, what’s the problem?

Behind the scenes, some of these tools are being used by cybercriminals to sneak harmful software onto your computer. This can include:

  • Malware: Software that secretly steals information, spies on your activity, or damages your files.

  • Ransomware: A nasty form of malware that locks your files and demands a payment to unlock them – kind of like someone changing the locks on your office and charging you for the key.

And it gets worse.

Some of these tools can scan the files you upload and collect sensitive info – like client lists, invoices, employee details, or even passwords and banking information.

That’s exactly the kind of data cybercriminals are after.

They look legit… but they’re not

These websites often look professional and reliable. That’s part of the trap. They do the job you need, so it’s easy to trust them. But trust can come at a high price if your business data is exposed or held for ransom.

What should you do instead?

If your team needs to convert files or handle documents regularly, it’s much safer to use tools from trusted software companies – ones that are built with security in mind.

Don’t rely on whatever pops up first in a Google search. One wrong click could put your business at risk.
