New Ransomware Alert: What UK Businesses Should Do

The Real Threat of Ransomware

When was the last time you considered what would happen if all your business files were suddenly locked and out of reach? That’s the exact scenario the FBI is warning about in its latest security alert, this time focused on a new ransomware group called Interlock.
Interlock only appeared in September 2024, but it is already targeting businesses and infrastructure across North America and Europe. Their approach is ruthless: break in, quietly steal sensitive data, then encrypt everything so you cannot access it. They then demand a ransom, usually with a tight deadline—about four days—threatening to leak your files online if you do not pay. This “double-extortion” tactic is becoming the norm, and Interlock is especially aggressive.

How do they get in? They use fake browser or security updates, booby-trapped websites, and other tricks to get you to click without thinking. Once inside, they can spy, steal passwords, and lock down both Windows and Linux systems. No business is too small to be a target.

Why Small and Medium Businesses Are at Risk

It is easy to think ransomware only happens to big companies, but small and medium sized businesses are often prime targets. Attackers know that security budgets can be limited, making it easier for them to break in. The impact can be devastating: lost access to client files, financial data, or essential systems—and the reputational damage can last long after the attack.

How to Protect Your Business

The FBI’s advice is practical and applies to every business:
  • Keep all systems patched and up to date to close security gaps.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication wherever possible for extra protection.
  • Use web filtering and firewalls to block malicious sites.
  • Segment your network so an infection in one area does not take down the whole business.
  • Invest in security tools that detect and stop suspicious activity before it spreads.
Taking these steps now is much easier and less costly than dealing with the aftermath of an attack. The FBI’s warning is clear: Interlock is not going away, so this is the right time to strengthen your defences.
